Contemporary Two
Unconventional from the start, the Laurel project clients had plans from an architect they were working with originally, and came to us for help because they weren’t loving them. We introduced them to Ana Williamson (AWA) and wham! That was it.
We took the renovation further than originally intended because the plan changed from a traditional 50’s style remodel to one that is extremely contemporary, thus we ultimately removed everything except the original foundation. However, because the location was in a floodplain, we needed to raise the elevation of the floor to conform to code. This required adding on to the existing foundation and reframing the entire floor plan — a particular challenge due to the difference in how new and old foundations tend to move.
EMFs (electromagnetic fields) also played a roll in the project. All objects have them, but because there’s been recent concern that those emitted by electronic devices may have negative effects on long term health, the clients chose to hard-wire internet and TV connections, among other measures, to reduce wireless transmissions, and replaced the smart electric meter with an analog one, locating it far from bedrooms.
