Contemporary Three

The Dale project was designed by Ana Williamson for a young couple without children, and no plans to have them. Instead, they race motorcycles — a pastime not quite as harrowing as raising kids, but one that influenced the design of the home, which needed to include a 1,200 square foot basement workshop at the back of the garage, complete with motorcycle lift, compressed air lines, sufficient ventilation and polished, exposed aggregate concrete floors throughout.

Spray foam insulation, a single-ply membrane roof, high end stucco details and tight, clean lines all added to the overall feel of the project.

Most challenging was a large, custom board-form concrete fireplace that anchors the exterior lines in dramatic fashion — how to build it that tall in one pour and have the details come out well. We invested lots of time with the architect, client and concrete sub collaborating on how best to pull it off — which we did.

Location: Willow Glen (San Jose) CA
Architect: Ana Williamson Architect, Menlo Park CA
Project Duration: 18 months

We had a very clear vision of what we wanted to accomplish: a very well built modern home with many unique features, but not overdone. The Mediterraneo team was able to get us there with high quality subcontractors, guidance towards needed upgrades, and talking us out of spending money where it wasn't critical. They have a very honest and balanced approach and were great fun to work with.
