Craftsman Cottage
This new house, built for a young couple with two small children, features a home office and all of the bedrooms on the upper level. The real challenge, however, was keeping its design in scale with the rest of the neighborhood, and getting it through the review committee. It’s situated in south Palo Alto, in the flood zone, where the majority of the houses are low roofed and single story — in fact many are Eichler’s — so it was important that the house appear to be smaller than it actually is. By taking a pragmatic approach to the layout and finishes, we were also able to bring the project in on budget, which was important for this young, hardworking family.
